Getting to Know Moby

Gina:

I’ve been eyeballing triangle looms for quite a few years now but as a reasonably frugal individual, I have always talked myself out of it. I also wanted a big one, because, well, go big or go home, right?

I’m already at home.

A month or two ago, John pulled me aside and said that our Spinning Guild, Palomar Handweavers and Spinners Guild (shameless plug. I’m full of them. I’m Amplifying!!) had a large triangle loom for sale and we bought it.

It took a couple of weeks of figuring out what kind of stand to use for it before I put it together and chose a yarn.

Loom on a loom… I’m very Meta

It was a bad choice, so I picked a different one. I watched YouTube videos and wove and unwove until it finally clicked.

I named the loom Moby. As in Dick. It took us a minute to get along, but we are doing well now. I learned to tie the loom to the stand so it didn’t fall on my head (again). I’m still working out the right tool for the job of weaving. I have one I am eyeballing and one that I am going to make. I think it will take several.

It took me a while, but I finished the shawl. It came off the loom nicely and I learned that the next shawl I make I want to use bulky yarn. Because even though it was pretty, the fabric was so gauzy that I kept poking my fingers through it, and keeping the weave even was a struggle.

Ultimately, I decided to pull it apart. THAT has been an adventure. I think I have learned more taking it apart than I did putting it together, although that was interesting too. I’ve decided that the yarn wants to be a chicken.

This isn’t my last adventure with Moby, and I’m looking forward to the next one!
