Yarn Adventures in Cambria, CA
One of the great things about traveling with people who “get” you is that they make sure that you go to the local yarn shop.
Recently, as my travel buddy and I wandered through Cambria on our most recent adventures, she noticed, while I was focused on what might be served at an Asian Fusion restaurant, that we were sitting directly across from a yarn shop. We headed over.
A yarn shop is a yarn shop is a yarn shop. I love them all and try to make sure I buy something when I visit. I picked up a knit kit which, of course I will be sharing as I knit, but one of the things that struck me about this shop was how accessible it was. In fact, I asked my buddy if we could pop over to peep at them again because I wanted to see…
That they are wheelchair accessible. I can’t remember how heavy the door was, and I didn’t do any recon on the bathroom, but I can say that the shop itself was reasonably open, despite plenty of product, and although it was split level, there was a ramp to the second level of the store. I.was.thrilled.
I am thankfully, currently, able bodied. But one of the things that I learned early in my career is that this is a very fragile state and life can take an unexpected turn. One of the reasons Inclusion is one of my core values is because when I say that I want everyone to have to opportunity to love yarn as much as I do, I really mean everybody.
Not every yarn shop is easy to navigate. They tend to be tucked into small spaces that may make it hard for a mobility device to access, and while I won’t call out the ones that aren’t accessible, I absolutely want to call out the places that are. Especially through the front door.
If you’re in Cambria, I recommend visiting. If you aren’t, they do internet sales. They are woman owned and I really liked this quote from their website: “I am focusing on female/family owned small businesses and fair-trade vendors in my product offerings.” She’s got a neat story and some really great products.
I hope to visit again sometime! (no photos, I didn’t take any, and while it was awesome of my travel buddy to take a photo of me at Hearst Castle, I didn’t want to interrupt her vacation by constantly asking her to take photos of me. Maybe next time)
Look for Ball & Skein on Main St.
